The Last Sacrifice – James A Moore

Brogan, a veteran worrier in a land who sacrifices their own every year to the Gods ruling them. The immortal servants take who they please in replace of gold coins, but they don’t normally take all four from the same family. So when Brogan returns from his summer of serving, he comes home to an empty house and four coins on his doorstep. He is then thrust into a rage-filled quest to save his family.

I wouldn’t rate this book in my top ten of all time, but it’s worth a read. I did enjoy it for the fact of the action and the fight scenes were well written. I did, however, feel like it glossed over certain parts. It felt rushed and pushed over things I would have questioned further and or would have preferred to take my times with. I won’t go into too much detail because it would spoiler the book for you guys.

Brogan McTyre is a brooding character for most of the book, which is understandable, but I feel like sometimes the decisions he makes are more because of that anger. I think it would have fared better if Moore had created a subconscious battle between his rational mind and his rage, this would have helped with the character development.

There is so much going on in this book of only 329 pages, I wanted more of everything. I wanted more adventure and explore this unfamiliar world. I wanted to know what the other characters were like, I wanted to know what their backstories were, even just a glimpse, I wanted to know what happened to get them there. I felt like I missing book 1, or a prequel somewhere. I did enjoy the book, I just wanted more.

It truly is a dark fantasy novel, it needs to be read in the dark nights of winter. It is cold and can be frightening at times. It is a roller-coaster of all sorts of emotions and I think any adult fantasy reader would love this book. It can be found on Amazon, but it is published by Angry Robot, based in Nottingham.

If you need any more information about this book and where to find it, message me. I have also been sharing snippets of these reviews on my Facebook as well, so you can always comment on there. If you have read this book, I would love it if you could leave your views on the comments in Facebook as well.

The next book will be Stranger of Tempest, by Tom Lloyd.
