Everyone wants that ‘best seller’ so find something that makes it straight to the top of peoples list. Use twists and turns, different topics and themes to cover. Makes it stand out, make it challenge what people already believe to make yours stand out against all the rest. It helps to understand you given genre to know what has already being done, so it can be different.

Find out what is trending at the time and see if you can go beyond what people want. Alternatively look at what has been trending over the last few years and see what people loved, if they loved it then they can love it again. But most importantly, don’t be afraid to step outside the box, step beyond what you feel comfortable writing.

If the readers know you are passionate about what you are writing the readers will also love it because they can feel your passion. It gives the characters purpose and a need to be alive and they want to tell their story.

If you have read my latest book, you will know I love my fantasy characters, but not because they are easy and comfortable to write about, but because there are no limits of power they have. You can give them absolutely anything and as long as it makes sense in their world the readers will take it.

Take your characters to their limits and beyond. Just like in Game of Thrones, no one knows who is going to live from one book to the next, exactly the same in the TV Series.

It’s not just about the plot line that stands out to the readers, the characters can make an impact as well. As long as you push your characters to their physical limits and even emotional limits it will connect them with the reader. They will be in the story with them, give the reader a chance to see how vulnerable they are, but also how strong the can be. It’s just human nature to hide and be free amongst different people.

If you follow the rules of society and human nature, it will give your character a better chance of standing out against the rest in the book, but also against other books.

This is why every single character in Game of Thrones is loved and hated. They are people living in this treacherous world that actually feels just as real as our own.
