If you understand what is catching about the covers of your genre you can incorporate them into your own. This will create a sense of familiarity with your cover when people look at them. Be very picky about the fonts you use and pictures your decide on, all of these can send people down the wrong route of what your book is about.
Using some Gothic font for a romance might intrigue people, fair enough, but it might also put people off reading it because they might think it might be a Gothic Horror novel. Be aware of what fonts people have used their covers, especially the really popular covers because these tell you a lot about what people want.
It has to showcase something interesting about your book. But it has a hundred words to say about it as well. Make sure it is precise and it looks professional. It’s the first thing people see and it’s almost just as important as the interior.
Also, if you don’t know already, I outsourced my own cover designer for both my Ebook edition and my paperback because I know I just don’t have enough skill to create something professional. It’s just one less thing to worry about as well. I gave my designer a few different sections of my book to give him a few ideas of what the book is about. I know for a fact I couldn’t have created something so beautiful as the covers I have.
If you don’t feel comfortable with some of the software and programmes that are used, don’t be afraid to ask around on writing pages. There will be someone out there who can direct you to someone who can help.
Alternatively, if you are interested in my cover and want more details about my designer, please email me through the website and I can send him your details.
