We all know reading helps develop our understanding of the genre we want to write in. But reading nonfiction can help just as much.

For example, are you writing historical fiction? Read up about your chose time period, make sure you have all the facts together before moving on.

Or are you writing crime? Why not read cases about how people found the killer? Why not read about Crime Scene Investigations.

These will help you track out your novel without missing vital information to make it authentic to your readers. Also, understanding the political side of the governments, or how societies evolve helps create your own fictional society.

I mostly deal with werewolves and vampires in my writing, so understanding where they come from originally, where the first story came from, what they looked like and how the stories have evolved, have all helped me evolve my writing. It has helped to understand the different types of werewolves, what they mean and how to make mine different.

It also makes it clear which characteristic is most important to my novel and what helps the storyline, but also when clichés of the genres to avoid. Seeing these helps our writing evolve because you can avoid them and figure out a new way of writing, or find a new writing style.

I have already covered the importance of researching, in a previous blog post, but I can’t stress enough how important it is. Research propels your writing from 2 dimensional to 3 dimensional. Which allows your audience connect with the setting, plot, and characters.
