I have only watched the first season. Bloodthirsty Saxon's is what I live for in a TV series. It is based on Bernard Cromwell Saxon Stories Novels. It follows a boy born into a Saxon noble family, then after his father is killed, he is the only one left to inherit the land his father owned. Although his uncle had other ideas, after the boy, Uhtred, was exiled by his uncle, he was left found by the Danes.
You can see how it strikes someone's intrigue. Based around the 9th century, the image is right there. Riding on horseback through grass lands, sword fighting and the endless possibilities of death. It is a small insight to why I love writing around these time periods.
From the very first episode, it had me engrossed and I felt like had a connection to the characters. The dialogue was hitting the top grades all the way through. Especially between Uhtred and Brida, the writers of the dialogue knew the cues perfectly. Even with such hard hitting plot lines and the emotional turmoil, there were times I was nearly crying with laughter. It was a good mix up between the harsh bloody events and the laughter between the characters and it creates a better connection with the audience as well.
The first episode involved the audience to watch on as a young boy of ten loses his family and everything he understands. He is then thrown into a different life where he has to grow up and learn new ways with the Danes. As the story progresses, there are times where I loved the main character, Uhtred, played expertly by Alexander Doetsch. But the storylines moved on to a point where I disliked his characters' choices, but somehow he manages to redeem himself. This is what makes such a great series to follow. It is true life to fall in and out of favour with some people. It makes it more relatable for the audience. They can see all parts of his character, rather than just the bad or good parts.
I would go into more detail, but I don’t want to give away any more spoilers than I already have done. The season was brilliantly filmed, the scenery was gorgeous and the characters were amazing. I just hope the second season is just as good.
I have thoroughly enjoyed watching this programme and am looking forwards to having the second season on Netflix.
Thank you!
