Creating the perfect characters

Creating characters can sometimes be really easy, they just appear before you've had a chance to even think about it. Other times, they are really difficult to create. There are a few simple steps to become at one with your characters.

NUMBER 1-

Get to know them. Write down all the different things about your characters. Even the really little details, such as background. What was their childhood like, did they struggle in school or did they fly through with high grades?

Even if they aren't details to be included in the novel or books. It is to help the writer visualise the character, to understand what makes them tick.

NUMBER 2-

Perhaps mocking up an interview. Write down some questions, then answer them in the mind of your characters. This helps you understand how they speak, what words would they use. Do they use slang word, or abbreviations? You can take into account where they are from, the different dialects or even nationality, are they British, French, Spanish or Italian and so on.

Doing this helps in the later stages of writing, you can play with the dialogue and the interactions between the characters.

NUMBER 3-

Sometimes drawing your characters can help. It helps visualise the characters, see their past on their skin. What damage has it caused, scars, burns, tattoos maybe. Honestly, I can't draw, so I use the other two methods to help me through the planning stages.

I hope this helps! And don't forget to sign up to the website to get my latest updates.

Thank you!
