Free Writing can be a useful technique to understand. it is difficult to understand, but it can be something incredible. It can create some amazing pieces of work, but the trick to free writing to be free. There is no beginning, middle or end, there is no reason for writing it, there is no plan or desire. Only the passion of writing.
It is a technique we used a lot in university, it is important to understand how to tap into your creative brain, even when you don't have a plan. There is always a way to create something even when you feel like you don’t want to. Just pick up your pen, or open the laptop. I would suggest free hand is sometimes better, but it depends on your preferences, I like to type, it feels better for me, plus I have terrible handwriting.
Just give it go. Write anything that comes to your mind, don't worry about editing it, or thinking about the idea and then writing. Just write the words that come to your mind at the moment. You might think it is useless, or doesn't make sense, but there might be something in those words that create something incredible.
Free writing has worked out for me in most cases. All my books, which are nearly ready to be published, are from my free writing sessions. They help free your mind from the trials and stress of life at the time. They help you push through the non-creative feeling you might have created around you. It helps you focus on the words rather than the idea you might come up with. I would usually write for about fifteen or twenty minutes, then go back over it and see what you think. See if there is something there you might like to use, an idea, a character, a line that strikes you straight away. There will always be something about the words you say that you love the most.
Give it a go and see what comes from it. See if there is something you can use. Perhaps an image that really speaks to you. Sometimes the free writing taps into your memories more than when you write with a plan in mind.
It might also be worth doing this on a regular basis. It might help with keeping your ideas fresh and different, it will give you a chance to work with different genres and crossing them with others. It gives you a chance to explore something you haven't done before.
Don't be afraid of failing. Writing isn't about doing what is right. It is about doing something real, something that really makes you tick as a person and what makes you comfortable.
See what happens. But enjoy yourself!
Writing should always be fun!
